Steps for Open Well Construction

1. Selection of Site

Choosing the right location is crucial. The site should be away from any septic tank or wastewater disposal area to avoid contamination. A geological survey can determine the soil condition and water table depth. 

2. Excavation

Once the site has been selected, excavation begins either manually or through machinery. The well is drilled to a depth of 10-20 meters, depending upon the depth of the water table and the conditions prevailing in the locality. Circular wells are common in Kerala due to their structural stability.

3.  Lining the Well

Upon attainment of desired depth, the walls are lined up with bricks, stones or reinforced cement concrete (RCC) rings to avoid its collapse. In fact, this structural lining forms the well resistant to pressures imparted by the environment and ensures long term usage of this structure.

4. Bottom Sealing

The bottom of the well is covered by a coat of gravel and sand, which helps form a natural filtration system. This helps improve the quality of the water by filtering out sediments as the water seeps into the well. 

5. Finishing the Well

Finally, a protective cover is placed over the well to prevent debris and dirt from entering. This protective cover keeps the water clean and safe for use.
